A COVID-19 Primer

virus statistics

Many of us are eager to learn more about COVID-19. We’ve been up-to-date with the latest news. We monitor the number of cases in our communities and countries like a hawk. But we know deep down that it’s not enough. We need to be able to understand the pandemic more. It’s so that we’ll know the implications. We’ll know how it affects various industries.

Truly understanding COVID-19 will help us keep our health safe. It will help us stay level-headed instead of spiraling down in a fit of panic. And it would help us make smart decisions in our everyday endeavors, from running errands to running businesses.

But it’s tough to sort through the various sources on the internet. Today, months after the pandemic started, there are countless websites, documentaries, and short videos about the coronavirus. We find it hard to sift through these sources and decide which ones we should trust.

Here is a list of trustworthy sources that you can watch, read, and listen to to help you with your search.

Documentary

For some of us, it’s easier to absorb important information by watching and listening. After years of schooling, we’re accustomed to this learning process. So if you’re eager to learn more about COVID-19, consider watching these documentaries.

Vox’s Coronavirus, Explained is a limited series on Netflix. With its three-episode run, it dives deep into three major topics about the coronavirus. The first is an overview of the virus. It explains how it started, its immediate effects, and how people are responding to it. The second episode explores the expedited and arduous process of developing a COVID-19 vaccine. Knowing this process will help us understand how companies like Pion are supporting the drug development industry. And lastly, the third episode shows how people worldwide are coping with the effects of the pandemic.

Podcast

Sometimes, no matter how eager we are to learn about COVID-19, we don’t have enough time for it. We’re too busy working and taking care of our families to sit down and read or watch about the pandemic. But that doesn’t mean we should be left behind. Instead, the simple solution to that is multitasking. Listen to a podcast while fulfilling your other duties.

The best podcast you can check out right now is Bloomberg’s Prognosis: Coronavirus. Through this, the hosts are analyzing the latest happenings surrounding the pandemic. They dive into the governments’ legislation, the economic downfall, and the people’s disrupted day-to-day lives. With episodes as short as ten minutes, you’d gain a deeper insight into what the world is experiencing right now.

Educational Articles and Blog Posts

If we really want to understand COVID-19, sometimes we have to turn to educational institutions. They produce studies and articles that are data-driven, tested, and reviewed by a group of fellow research experts. While many of these scientific papers are freely available online, they can be hard to understand. Thus, we’re discouraged from writing.

What we need is a source that’s backed by an educational institution but easier to understand. One of such sources is the Brookings Institution. Ever since the pandemic started, they’ve been writing and publishing essays about COVID-19’s impact on politics, society, the economy, education, and the environment. They provide help analysis to understand further how the world will recover from the effects of the pandemic.

Guidelines and Protocols

Of course, apart from learning about the COVID-19 pandemic, we must also be updated on the guidelines and protocols that will keep us safe from the virus. It might be hard to accept now, but we need guidance whenever we do something so mediocre nowadays. Even if it’s as simple as going on a road trip, we need to know how to stay safe.

The good thing is that the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has laid down the guidelines to keep ourselves safe. It has specific instructions on various activities such as traveling and staying at hotels. It also instructs us how to recognize the signs of COVID-19 and what to do after we test positive.

What’s even better is that the CDC also provides helpful videos on their website. This makes it easier for us to digest all of the information that we need to be mindful of at all times.

The internet has been constant in providing us information about the coronavirus. But we’re also very much aware that not every information we find online is trustworthy. So it’s important to always turn to reputable sources to help us understand the science behind COVID-19, how the world will recover from its impact, and how to keep ourselves safe from it.
